4 Useful Tips How To Pick The Right E-Liquid
Even if we come from many different backgrounds and are into vaping for different reasons, all vapers have one thing in common – they consume e-liquid, and they’re constantly racking their brains about what flavor, brand or product line to try out next. If something has some kind of taste, chances are that there is such an e-liquid out there, and, besides, nicotine content, PG/VG content, as well as other factors are not less important when searching for the right juice.
There are tons of e-juice flavors out there, and choosing the right one for you might be quite a task. Whether you’re new to vaping or already an experienced cloud chaser, this guide can come handy to help you choose new treats for your tastebuds!
Tips How To Pick The Right E-Liquid For You
1. Buy from reputable brands only
Although inexpensive Chinese e-liquids often become favorites for those who have just started using electronic cigarettes, I definitely do not recommend anyone getting cheap juices with handwritten labels from eBay. The tempting price tag comes together with uncertainty about the origin of the e-liquid – it, of course, might be produced in an acceptable lab using standard ingredients, but it might as well be a homemade concoction of the cheapest – and maybe even harmful – substances available. And the author of this brewage might even not know what he or she is doing.
However, this doesn’t mean that you need to stick with ‘mainstream’ juices. New e-liquid manufacturers are swiftly popping up all over the world, and the majority of them are serious businesses, so they simply can’t afford to produce a low grade product. If the company/brand/line you want to try has a website, some naturally looking and positive user feedback, as well as sufficiently thorough documentation, there are no reason to be afraid of it and not to try these juices.
2. Choose no more nicotine than you need
This is where a lot of vapers, both new and already experienced, often screw up. I have seen people who have never smoked even a single tobacco cigarette vaping on e-juice with 24 mg of nicotine per milliliter, as well as passionate 2 pack-a-day ex-smokers switching to vaping no nicotine juices and complaining about nicotine withdrawal symptoms. In both cases, they’re doing it very wrong.
First of all, never use nicotine if you don’t need it. There’s simply no point of doing that – nicotine is a very addictive substance, and if you’re into vaping but have already overcome your nicotine addiction, juices with 0 mg/ml of nic is your thing. Secondly, I also don’t recommend getting juices with high nicotine content just to achieve the much desired throat hit – if you’re a newcomer to vaping, better start out low, say, 8 or 12 mg/ml, and, if possible, don’t get accustomed to the throat hit. Although nicotine overdose is highly unlikely, better not to take in more of it than you need, because it, after all, is the only harmful substance in your e-juice.
Also, if you have been vaping for a while already, it might be a good idea to review your nicotine intake. Some vapers tend to always stick to the same nicotine level because it simply works for them. However, stepping down from 12 mg/ml to 8 mg/ml is certainly not hard to do, and you might not even notice any changes at all. And, by doing so, you will eventually be able to get down to 0, which, in my opinion, is one of the most important goals to achieve if you’re an ex-smoker.
3. Pay attention to PG/VG ratio
The propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG) content of an e-liquid are both mostly associated with cloud production and throat hit. We will cover these aspects in another article. However, PG and VG also play a certain role when it comes to flavor. Juices high in VG usually have a muted taste, while very high PG content (more than 80% or so) might result in some harshness in the flavor. Some vapers have also stated that exceptionally high VG content makes you taste the VG itself, which, although only a little sweet, might not work for you.
Let’s remember that such aspects as cloud production and throat hit can also affect your perception of the taste. After trying hundreds of different e-liquid flavors and mixes in the recent months, our observations indicate that the optimal flavor is usually achieved in combinations ranging from 70% PG/30% VG to 50% VG/ 50% VG. However, this, of course, always depends on the setup and personal preferences, so our advice is to try out different PG/VG ratios and find out what works the best for you.
4. Don’t be conservative about flavors
There’s a term out there, ‘vapers tongue’, which is used to describe getting accustomed to a certain e-liquid flavor and losing the ability to fully taste it over time. Therefore for vapers, it’s always a good idea not to stick with a single flavor – if it is possible, get multiple flavors/brands/lines every time you purchase your e-liquid. Don’t be afraid to mix them, don’t hesitate to try out some more exotic and uncommon tastes, and remember to always thoroughly clean or swap your coils when testing out new flavors.
Here’s a tip: when purchasing new flavors, I always try to associate a particular flavor with edible products I’ve tried before – simply because a lot of flavorings used in e-liquids are similar to additives found in food, especially in candy and soft drinks. If you’re aware of that, choosing a new flavor gets a lot easier, because now you know – chances are that the pineapple e-juice might closely resemble that pineapple jelly candy you love, but an e-liquid with “cough drops” in its name might mimic the flavor of those Halls.
