9 Appearances of Vaping in Pop Culture

Vaping in Pop Culture

There’s no denying it: in movies, TV shows and music videos, vaping is slowly but convincingly replacing smoking. And, while e-cig opponents may see it as an attempt to lure the public into a habit of which they should stay away, we think that the pop culture holds a great potential of showing the world what vaping really is and why is it better for you and people around you than smoking traditional tobacco cigarettes.

Although it would be impossible to mention every single celebrity who vapes or list all movies with e-cigarette related scenes, here’s a compilation of some of the most interesting and most vivid appearances of vaping in pop culture.

9 Appearances of Vaping in Pop Culture

At an Awards Ceremony: Leonardo DiCaprio

Let’s be honest: the time has come, and we can no longer imagine DiCaprio without a vape setup in his hand. Seems like wherever he goes, a trail of clouds follows him. Also, looks like he has made the important transition and upgraded from cig-a-likes to a good-looking box mod.

While this is definitely one of the most talked-about moments involving a celebrity and vaping to date, let’s not forget that the American Lung Association has called DiCaprio’s actions “deeply troubling”. And, to tell you the truth, we think that the only “deeply troubling” thing is making such bold statements about a habit which is 95% safer than smoking.

In a Movie: The Tourist

Released in 2010, The Tourist has one of the first vaping scenes to date. And, to make things even better, Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie are both present in it. Although it’s just a cig-a-like in his hand, when it comes to vaping on the big screen, this scene can already be considered almost iconic.

In a Pop Music Video: Lily Allen – Hard Out Here

In this music video, e-cigarettes appear in the form of pure advertising. To be more specific, it involves a promotion of a cig-a-like brand called E-Lites, and, throughout the video, models can be seen vaping on them or playing with the packaging. And, while we have some not so flattering things to say about cig-a-likes, this video can surprise with the glittering and lively performance. Also, it was released on November 2013 – at a time when cig-a-likes was the most common type of e-cigarettes and massive box mods were not a mainstream thing yet.

In a Movie: Focus

The 2015 movie Focus, widely known as one of the best crime dramas Hollywood had to offer in 2015, is also one of the latest films where you can see a guy vaping. While this eGo kit appears in only two short scenes here, it nicely complements the character portrayed by Rodrigo Santoro.

In a Comedy TV Show: 2 Broke Girls

Vaping has also found its way into the sitcom TV genre. In the popular series 2 Broke Girls, the 11th episode of season 4 includes a scene with a group of “vaping hipsters”. It’s quite interesting that these guys are using some decent-looking box mods – a fresh change in comparison to the cig-a-likes which can be seen much more often on the big screen. Besides, keep in mind that this particular episode originally aired on February 2015.

In a Movie: Sex Tape

In the 2014 comedy Sex Tape, Jack Black, who portrays the owner of an adult website, can be seen firing up a clearomizer which resembles an Innokin iClear 16. While we think that this film should be treated only as a solution for a boring evening and nothing else, the vaping part fits the scene and the character surprisingly well.

In Drake’s Instagram Feed

Yes, this is just a simple picture with something that only distantly resembles a box mod in it. But it also has received over 300K likes, and people just can’t stop discussing whether or not the Canadian singer/rapper Drake has also gotten into the vape game. Be that as it may, this is perhaps one of the most talked about vaping setups on the Internet.

In a Movie: Drive Hard

Screenwriter, producer and actor John Cusack has been on the big screen for a long time already. But now Cusack’s fans have been introduced to his newest pastime – vaping. Cusack, who can be seen vaping in several different films, also chases some decent clouds in one of his latest movies, Drive Hard. Actually, even the trailer of this movie starts with a scene of Cusack vaping.

In a Rock Music Video: Chris Holmes

Something a bit different here. The former guitarist from the heavy metal band W.A.S.P can be seen casually vaping throughout his recently released music video. And, although we are not huge fans of the video itself, this certainly tells us one important thing: when it comes to vaping, there’s no cultural, no background and no style related limitations. Vaping is for everyone, and that’s what it’s meant to be.

To sum it all up, we all know that if something appears in the hands of a celebrity, more and more people try to adapt it in their own lives, and a trend is born. And this has two sides. The brighter side – vaping celebrities may influence the further growth of the e-cigarette industry, which is good, while the downside is that vaping opponents will have something more to talk about. And, although we definitely agree that the popularization of vaping should never reach minors’ audience, our viewpoint is that promotion of a healthier alternative of smoking in a music video or a film is not a thing to be condemned.
