How Can CBD Help You To Get Rid Of Acne?
Acne is the most common skin disease in humans. Most people suffer from this condition at some point in their lives.
Acne primarily results from overactive sebaceous glands. Sebaceous glands secrete sebum, which keeps the skin moisturized while also protecting it from the elements.
When these glands become overactive, they secrete more sebum than they should. The excess oil combines with the dirt and dead cells to block skin pores.
Consequently, clogged skin pores can offer a breeding ground for the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes, resulting in unsightly red blemishes. In addition, acne pimples typically break out on the face, forehead, upper back, shoulders, and chest. That’s because these areas contain the most sebaceous glands.
Causes and Symptoms of Acne
According to medical marijuana doctors, you can use CBD roll on for pain relief. But before we examine how CBD can treat pain and what that means for people with acne, let’s begin by understanding the causes and symptoms of acne.
Excess sebum production resulting from overactive sebaceous glands is the primary cause of acne. Various reasons could make sebaceous glands hyperactive. Examples include hormonal imbalance and elevated stress levels.
Acne might also result from genetic predisposition, certain foods, and certain medications. In rare cases, the disease could be triggered by an underlying medical condition, particularly conditions that result in the inflammation of the skin.
Although people of all ages can develop acne, the risks are higher for teens and tweens, and pregnant women.
Common symptoms of acne include;
- Whiteheads – Closed clogged pores
- Blackheads – Open clogged pores
- Papules – Red, tender bumps
- Pustules – Pimples filled with pus at their tips
- Nodules – Large, solid, tender lumps under the skin
- Cystic lesions – Pus-filled lumps under the skin
Without treatment, acne can cause emotional distress and self-esteem issues. But even after treatment, acne pimples can leave your skin with scars and blemishes.
Common Acne Treatments
It’s difficult to prevent acne from occurring. However, there are numerous ways to treat and manage the condition, including keeping your skin clean and staying away from skincare products that could escalate the clogging of skin pores. In addition, it’s now emerging that CBD might also help to clear acne.
CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a chemical in cannabis noted for its incredible healing properties. CBD is commonly recommended for pain management.
Besides pain, the compound may also treat anxiety, seizures, inflammation, nausea, and sleep disorders like insomnia.
Ways CBD May Treat Acne
CBD treats acne by relieving the condition’s core symptoms, including pain and inflammation.
1. CBD and Pain
Cannabidiol is commonly recommended for pain relief.
CBD exerts its analgesic effects by impacting the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a complex cell-signaling system that plays a role in maintaining endocrine functions, managing circadian rhythms, and boosting overall immunity. The system contains a series of receptors, including pain-signaling receptors.
When you administer CBD, the compounds in the product enter your endocannabinoid system and stimulate specific endocannabinoid receptors in a manner that results in better pain management.
CBD may also relieve acne-induced pain by enhancing the body’s access to its endocannabinoids, such as anandamide. Anandamide is a neurotransmitter that plays a significant role in mediating pain and inflammation. CBD may boost anandamide signaling by inhibiting enzymes that degrade this neurotransmitter, such as fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH).
2. CBD for Inflammation
Inflammation is another common side effect of acne breakouts that cannabidiol might treat. However, a 2016 animal study found that CBD could ease pain and inflammation without triggering significant side effects.
CBD alleviates acne-induced inflammation by interfering with the body’s inflammatory messenger activity. Another way cannabidiol can ease inflammation is by increasing blood circulation. CBD is famous for its vasodilating properties. The compound dilates constricted blood vessels, thereby facilitating the transportation of oxygenated blood and nutrients to, while helping remove toxins from, the inflamed acne pimples. It is necessary for keeping inflammation at bay.
But cannabidiol doesn’t just address the side effects of acne. The compound can also prevent acne breakouts from happening in the first place.
CBD contains powerful antioxidants, such as polyphenols. Polyphenols protect the body against bacterial infections, including infection from the acne-causing bacteria Propionibacterium acnes.
A 2014 study established that CBD may also slow down the processes involved in acne breakouts, including the oversecretion of sebum. During this study, researchers investigated the effects of CBD on human sebocytes – the cells that create sebum. CBD was able to inhibit sebocytes from secreting too much sebum.
Besides fighting acne, the cannabidiol may also improve acne scars. According to a study published in the journal La Clinica Terapeutica, 20 participants with scars related to dermatitis and psoriasis applied CBD-enriched ointments on the scarred areas twice a day for three months. After three months, researchers noted a significant improvement in their overall skin appearance. CBD remarkably improved aspects like skin hydration and elasticity. Researchers concluded that CBD might, indeed, improve acne scars.
There’s a shortage but certainly not a lack of studies citing cannabidiol for its ability to treat acne.
To make the most of CBD, opt for products intended for topical application, such as ointments and salves. Also, go slow on the compound to avoid experiencing side effects.
Most importantly, remember to discuss with your doctor before using CBD for acne. That’s especially if you’re already on other acne medications.
